Cristiano Ronaldo Tops Highest-Paid Athletes

Cristiano Ronaldo has established his supremacy in the off-field setting once again, becoming the leader of the annual list of the highest-paid players in the world created by Sportico, and easily surpassing an old rival Lionel Messi. In 2025, the Portuguese superstar earned an astonishing $260 million, which is almost twice the earning of Messi, and this validates his position as the most influential commercial sports figure in football.

The main source of income of Ronaldo, according to Sportico, is his valuable contract with Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr, which is supposedly worth 200 million a year. There is another $60 million in endorsements, personal ventures and global brand alliances. It is the third year that Ronaldo has topped the list and the ninth year he made a minimum of $100 million.

One of the reasons why Ronaldo is successful in finances is his unmatched digital presence. His total social media followings of over one billion makes him to this day one of the best marketing assets in international sport. His portfolio of endorsements has some long-term and high-profile deals with Nike, Herbalife, Binance, Therabody, and other developing technological companies.

Miami’s inter city champions, Lionel Messi is ranked number three with earnings of $130 million. Although his football earn is not as high as that of Ronaldo, Messi still enjoys massive endorsement agreements, most of them with adidas. Recently he has signed a new contract that will keep him in Miami until 2028.

The ranking made by Sportico also points to the further commercial power of football, as 13 footballers appear in the top 100. Brazilian star Neymar has, however, shown a significant decrease in the ranking, which is indicative of injuries and decreased business dynamics.

As Ronaldo bargains a new contract at Al-Nassr until 2027 and the two legends are set to take part in the upcoming world cup, the competition has not subsided yet, both in terms of money and history.
