Champions League: Arteta Set for Clash with Luis Enrique

In the Champions League semi-finals, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta must defeat one of his inspirations, Luis Enrique’s Paris Saint-Germain. Arteta hopes to lead Arsenal to their second Champions League final appearance in history by hosting PSG in the opening leg on Tuesday.

He faces opposition from a personal friend who, along with Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, helped his colleague shift from the pitch to the dugout. When Arteta started playing at Barcelona, Luis Enrique was a senior star, which shaped his managerial attitude at Arsenal.

“He was a major character and supported the young players. Arteta stated he had great memories.

I admire his versatility as a player and manager, leaving his mark wherever.

“You can sense it´s his team with the way his players behave, the way they want to attack and dominate games.”

The student beat his master once this season, when Arsenal defeated PSG 2-0 at the Emirates in October. Since Luis Enrique’s decision to bench Ousmane Dembele against Arsenal for disciplinary reasons, PSG has seen a significant improvement, largely due to the forward’s excellent form.

Luis Enrique agrees: “He’s a fantastic coach.

“He changed Arsenal´s fortunes from a somewhat winless streak to one of the best teams in the world that is competing for titles.”

Mikel Arteta and Luis Enrique will share a private moment after the match, but they will put their friendship on hold to win the Champions League. Arsenal have never won the event, losing to Barcelona in 2006, and PSG have had a disappointing history, losing to Bayern Munich in their sole final in 2020.

The European holy grail would immortalise Arteta in north London and end any doubts about his trophy-winning skills. Arsenal hasn’t won a trophy since Arteta’s FA Cup win five years ago. Arsenal enter the PSG match confident after defeating holders Real Madrid 5-1 aggregate in the quarterfinals.

They have struggled in the Premier League, losing the crown to Liverpool following a string of draws. In Arteta’s defence, injuries have plagued Arsenal this season, with Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus still out.

PSG have defeated Liverpool and Aston Villa, putting them up for a hat-trick of English wins if they beat Arsenal. Arsenal may need to reproduce the feverish mood that swept Madrid in the last eight in their first Champions League semi-final since losing to Manchester United in 2009.
