Carlos Vela Retires After 19 Legendary Seasons

Following a remarkable 19-year career, former Arsenal and Real Sociedad forward Carlos Vela has formally declared his retirement from professional football. On Tuesday, the 36-year-old made the revelation on social media.

Vela started his career in Arsenal’s junior setup and made his senior debut on loan to Salamanca, a Spanish team. After this, he made 29 Premier League games for the Gunners before starting a seven-year run with La Liga team Real Sociedad.

Celebrated for his adaptability, Vela performed especially well as a forward, attacking midfielder, and winger. Additionally, making 72 games with the Mexican national team, he twice won the CONCACAF Gold Cup.

“Through my career, I have had some very unique events; but, the time has come to formally retire from professional football,” Vela stated.

“Sharing my career with all of you has been an honour and a privilege,” he said.

Vela signed for Major League Soccer’s Los Angeles FC in 2018, where he was instrumental in the team’s success. He guided LAFC to victory in the U.S. Open Cup as well as the MLS Cup. Vela is the all-time leader in goals, assists, and appearances; his 34-goal haul in the 2019 season broke a league record.

John Thorrington, general manager and co-president of LAFC, delivered Vela a sincere homage.

“He has represented LAFC as the captain, the heartbeat, and the face. In the annals of our club, Carlos is among the best players and leaders,” Thorrington remarked.
