“Blockbuster”: Fifa celebrates Kylian Mbappe’s debut

Fifa used Pakistani music “Blockbuster” to commemorate Kylian Mbappe’s debut. Pakistani artists Zulfikar Jabbar Khan (Xulfi), Umair Butt, Faris Shafi, and Shamroz Butt wrote “Blockbuster” a Punjabi song with an ancient folk music feel.

Famous Pakistani rapper Faris, Umair, and Gharwi Group—Abida, Rooha Rawal, Sajida Bibi, and Saba Hassan—sung the song. The viral song played in the background when Fifa shared a loop on its TikTok account of Mbappe, 25, celebrating on the field.

The caption said “Mbappe’s ‘BLOCKBUSTER’ entry”.

Millions of Pakistanis and foreign fans have embraced the song, released on May 25 as part of Coke Studio Pakistan’s season 15.

After seeing Fifa’s post, Xulfi remarked on Instagram: “Our ‘Blockbuster’ just appeared alongside Mbappe on FIFA’s official TikTok page! Feels surreal.

We create timeframes that were once impossible with our voice and beats. Congratulations Pakistan! This is amazing and big.”

The catchy dancing and one-take music video made the song popular. The song also trended on Spotify India, where users commented on its international success on Instagram.

One Indian listener stated, “It seems as if I have arrived at the border while scrolling.”

Fifa borrowed Pakistani folk artist Arif Lohar’s 2023 song “Aa” to wish Lionel Messi a happy birthday weeks before.
