Barcelona one win title from La Liga

Due to Real Madrid’s defeat over Real Sociedad, Barça will have the first five-match points against Espanyol. FC Barcelona’s prospects improved dramatically in Tuesday’s Liga matches. Real Madrid was defeated 2-0 against Real Sociedad after their 1-0 win over Osasuna, which Jordi Alba secured in stoppage time.

Barcelona had one win from the La Liga title

With goals from Take Kubo and Barrenetxea, the Catalans have all but clinched the league title. Barça has a 14-point lead in the league. On Wednesday, however, the deficit might be cut to 13 points. That’s because a win by Atlético Madrid over Cádiz on Wednesday would put them in second place. If Barça wins the derby against Espanyol on Sunday, May 14 at 9 pm CEST at Cornellà, they will have clinched the title mathematically.

Barça may already be champions before their match against Espanyol has even started. If two things occur, then that would be the situation. First, Atlético Madrid would have to lose one of their two remaining games before then, either tonight against Cadiz at 10 pm CEST or next Tuesday against Villarreal at 6.30 pm CEST. Second, on May 13 at 9 pm CEST, Getafe must win as guests at Santiago Bernabéu, meaning Real Madrid must lose.

A win in the derby would guarantee Barça the title regardless of the results of the other games. If they lose, they still have four games to play and must win just one to claim the title. In the highly improbable event that Barça loses all five of their remaining matches, one of the two Madrid teams would still need to win all five to catch up to them. Therefore, it is reasonable to assume that winning the championship is merely a matter of time at this point.
