Before their trophy presentation at Camp Nou, the newly crowned La Liga winners Barcelona lost 2-1 to Real Sociedad. This was a surprise.
Barcelona lose to Real Sociedad despite La Liga title
Mikel Merino and Alexander Sorloth scored goals for Real Sociedad, which is currently in fourth place and fighting for a spot in the Champions League. Robert Lewandowski of Barcelona scored a goal late in the game, but it wasn’t enough for Barcelona to win.
Even though Barcelona had already won the title, coach Xavi put together a strong team. But the team fell behind quickly when Jules Kounde lost the ball in a dangerous spot, which let Sorloth set up Merino for the first goal. This was the first time this season that Marc-Andre ter Stegen gave up a goal from free play at Camp Nou in La Liga.
Ousmane Dembele and Franck Kessie both came close to tying the score for Barcelona. But in the second half, they were not as strong, and Real Sociedad took advantage of a counterattack. Martin Zubimendi took the ball away from Frenkie de Jong, which led to Sorloth scoring and giving the away team a 2-0 lead.
When Barcelona captain Sergio Busquets was taken off near the end of the game, he got a standing ovation. It was one of his last home games before he left the club in the summer. Lewandowski’s late goal gave Barcelona a glimmer of hope, but Real Sociedad held on to win a very important game.
The loss dampened the celebrations at Camp Nou for a short time, but the team and fans quickly got back up to speed. After Espanyol fans invaded the stage last week and stopped the party, Barcelona was able to start the party up again, though they were at first quiet because they lost. Even though they lost, Barcelona will now focus on their last three games, where they hope to end the season strongly.
