According to the source, Barcelona prefers Martinez over Fresneda because the 20-year-old produces club consensus. Martinez left La Masia for L’Hospitalet in 2016 before joining Girona in 2018.

He made his first-team debut at the Catalan club and helped them win promotion back to La Liga, scoring three goals and four assists in 33 games. Xavi thinks Martinez is better than Fresneda, and the club likes his comeback.

Martinez, whose contract expires in 2025, has expressed interest in returning to Barcelona for a first-team place. Girona won’t negotiate his €20 million release clause, which is a problem. After all, Girona recently rejected proposals from Atletico Madrid ranging from €12 million to €18 million.

“If I return it will be to the first team. Obviously, I would like to return to Barça, but I would like to go to any of the big clubs, which are the best in the world,” Martinez said.
