Barcelona Academy Talent Nears Exit After Limited Game Time

Barcelona is already developing their team for the following season, including player tying down to new contracts. The Blaugrana have already started negotiations to renew Wojciech Szczesny, whose present contract expires at the end of the season.

Since January, the 34-year-old Pole has been the favourite choice in goal under Hansi Flick; he has now decided to stay at Barcelona past this season.

This, however, intensifies Inaki Pena’s determination to leave the team and hinders his prospects of acquiring game time. Unexpectedly excluded from the team, the La Masia custodian is going through a difficult phase that is starting to affect him.

As such, MARCA notes that Pena’s future at Barcelona is likely to be complicated by Szczesny’s contract’s renewal. His present deal extends until June 2026, and club officials have asked about his intentions.

He first meant to wait until the season was over before making a choice, but he is growing more and more sure he needs consistent playing time to develop his career. The administration of Barcelona is likewise starting to view him as a possible departure candidate. Pena at last got his much-needed chance as the starting custodian after Marc- Andre ter Stegen was injured. But in January Hansi Flick chose Szczesny and sent the Spaniard to the bench.

Pena had earlier been reassured by the coach that he would be the primary custodian following Ter Stegen’s injury, but he has subsequently altered his mind and his choice now looks final.

Pena has clearly felt emotionally affected by this unannounced bench drop. His colleagues have seen a change in his attitude even as he keeps proving professionalism and dedication. He seems to be somewhat lonely and quiet.

The 26-year-old is well-known for his mental toughness and calmness, which enable him to keep great concentration during games, bounce back from mistakes fast, and face rivalry with confidence. These attributes have been tested, though, in recent months.

Pena has already drawn interest from several La Liga teams; it seems most likely that he will split ways with Barcelona come summer.
