Arsenal had made a dramatic late comeback of their own to beat Newcastle United 2-1, at St James Park, to continue their title hopes in the Premier League. Newcastle had taken the lead with a first-half header by Nick Woltemade and seemed to have a fourth consecutive home victory over the Gunners in sight.
Arsenal had a penalty rejected by the VAR, and had Nick Pope block attempts by Eberechi Eze, Jurrien Timber, and Leandro Trossard, who hit the post.
This was broken in the 84th minute when a sub, Mikel Merino, volleyed the smart short-corner cross of Declan Rice to bring the score even. Later into stoppage time, Arsenal had done the comeback as Martin Odegaard delivered the perfect pass to Gabriel Magalhaes whose powerful near-post goal earned all three points.
Manager Mikel Arteta celebrated the win as a breakthrough saying it was a huge chance to prove ourselves. Merino, who was scoring against his old club, attributed the set-piece emphasis of Arsenal which has generated 36 league goals since last season on corners, 15 of them more than any other team.
The victory brought them nearer to the leaders Liverpool who had lost points in their previous match against Crystal Palace, and Newcastle were shocked by the typical late goal of Arsenal.
